Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 within Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young child. She was a night nurse so that she could give her aunt to have the time she needed in her working day to pursue her passion for theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be powerful in promoting activism. DuVernay was additionally taught by her mom who had a strong moral compass and urged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her family, she spent every summer with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to direct a movie that focused on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was in university. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury. She was also asked to look through their trash. Her tasks left her disappointed by journalism and she chose to move towards the publicity sector. DuVernay was brought in right out of college as an intern at the studio that was small. In 1999, she launched her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. The company also launched a variety of promotion and lifestyle networks, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
